News - archiveWelcome to our news page with information about new courses, developments in our bushcraft school and media appearances.
In spite of the recession 2009 has been a busy year for Wildwood Bushcraft. It seems that at times like these self-sufficiency is all the more relevant, as are holidays in the UK. Working with organisations We started the year with a business planning and team building event for the environmental charity BioRegional - it was a real pleasure to provide an event for an organisation which is doing such inspiring work. The event went so well they asked us to repeat it in February 2010! We have had a return visit from Towers Property Development for a team building event in the summer - nice to see them back again. We have continued to work with local schools such as Lindfield Primary, Petworth Area Schools and several schools in the Kingston area. We also assisted with an event in London for Groundwork Trust an organisation working for communities in need. We helped with an open day for the National Trust at Standen with lots of families calling by to learn fire lighting! We had another successful year running bushcraft workshops at the Green Crafts Field, Glastonbury Festival. We are looking forward to attending the 40th anniversary year next year! In 2009 we also joined the Institute of Outdoor Learning to support the development of standards in the bushcraft industry. Courses We ran our first Tracking Foundation (4 day) course in the summer which saw participants improving their tracking and observation skills dramatically. A great opportunity to really immerse yourself in the woodland environment and develop your powers of observation and deduction. Our Bushcraft Canoe Expedition also went well despite quite sporty wind and wave conditions on Loch Sionascaig. We had to revise some of our plans but had a good adventure with plenty of trout caught! We are running a new Buckskin Brain Tanning workshop in June this year with visiting instructor Kfir Mendel. We have also introduce a new day course on Axe Craft.
Arctic Sweden Expeditions We are excited to announce two new expeditions to Arctic Sweden: a summer, Bushcraft Canoe Expedition in the Land of the Midnight Sun and a Winter Arctic Survival Expedition. These courses provide a unique range of comprehensive survival skills,
in incredibly beautiful but challenging environment. BBC Inside Out programme In August 2008, Kaddy Lee-Preston, the presenter of Inside Out (South East region), joined us on a Survival Weekend. The programme was broadcast on 15 October 2008, but if you missed it you can view it on our YouTube channel . Scotsman Newspaper We were pleased to see that our Scottish Canoe Expedition (£620: 3-9 May 2009) was recommended in the Scotsman's Living Section.
Schools In 2008 we have intensified our educational work with schools and have created a new Schools web page dedicated to this. We have enjoyed working with local primary schools and disaffected teenagers from London schools. Recently we also taught at some Scottish schools, including one on the Island of Raasay in the Inner Hebrides. If you know of a school that might benefit from a day of bushcraft, please let them know about us! Accredited Navigation Course Recently we have become a provider for National Navigation Award Scheme. This enables us to provide an accredited and well recognised qualification in Navigation at Bronze Level. Facebook, Myspace and Flickr Wildwood Bushcraft now has profile pages on these sites, so if any of you are also there please do "add us", "befriend us" or "become a fan", as appropriate! It seems a great way to keep in touch, and share information, photos and news.
