We are proud to be part of Nesta's innovative educational experiment - "idiscover". This Autumn Wildwood will be delivering sessions in woodland survey with schools from the Scottish Highlands. New Base in Scotland

We are planning to expand our business to a new base near Fort William on the west coast of Scotland. This is a stunning area with some of the highest mountains in the UK, beautiful birch, pine and oak forests, and sheltered sea and freshwater lochs. It is the outdoor capital of the UK and the perfect setting for more adventurous bushcraft and survival activities. We will be developing a range of new courses in this area (e.g. island survival, highland wildlife etc).

Our key courses will still be running in Sussex too.

Bushcraft Canoe Expedition to Loch Shiel

As part of developing our Scottish courses we are running our first 4 day expedition to Loch Shiel from 15-19 October 2010. The course costs £420, including food. We have made several recce trips to this area and it is a classic canoe journey! The area is dramatic and remote, steeped in history and rich in wildlife. During recent visits we have seen otters, golden eagles and signs of pinemartens. The journey is varied starting in a long freshwater loch surrounded by mountains and forest - moving to a meandering river, down some rapids and then to a sea loch studded with wooded islands. We will be not only having an adventure but also learning some key bushcraft skills: collecting shellfish, firelighting with local materials, building stone shelters, setting up wild camps ... but most importantly you will be immersed in the wilderness for several days.

Wildwood Navigation

We have created a subsidiary organisation - Wildwood Navigation which is focused purely on navigation courses only. Amongst the new courses is Mountain Navigation.

This course will be based near Fort William on the west coast of Scotland (close to Ben Nevis). It is a weekend course running on 20-22 August and 5-7 November and costs only £120. On this course you will learn vital skills for navigating in mountainous areas. Like all our courses it is very much hands on with Saturday night spent wild camping up in the mountains and a chance to practice night navigation among other skills.

New date for Arctic Survival Expedition Sweden

We have a new date for this course (19-27 February 2011) building on our fantastic experience last winter! This course offers a range of exciting experiences in an extreme winter environment, but with plenty of support. It is a great opportunity to take your bushcraft and survival skills to the next level. Activities include dog sledding, ice breaking, snow mobiles, ski-ing, ice fishing, trapping, building snow shelters, and an introduction to firearms. The course costs a very competitive £1200 for the week including all food but not flights (flights last year were purchased separately for around £250-300 return).

Brain Tanned Buckskin course

We now have a new date for this two day workshop to make buckskin from fallow deer hide. This is a fascinating skill to learn for anyone interested in primitive living. The course will be led by a visiting expert from the US - Kfir Mendel - who will teach you to prepare a hide using the brain tanning method. You will leave with not only a new skill but some buckskin you made yourself! It will be held on 8-10 October in Sussex and costs only £160 per person.
